The Saffron Walden Childrens' Orchestra (SWCO) is a training orchestra for young musicians living in and around Uttlesforde. We welcome all young orchestral instrumentalists who are playing to a standard of grade 1 to 5 and who want to have fun learning how to play in an orchestra.

Our courses help children to develop as musicians and to enjoy learning how to play with others in a large ensemble. We usually play some classical as well as light repertoire. Children also work together with section coaches, and then on the final day all join together to perform as an orchestra. Our gallery has some recent images of the childrens' orchestra.

Our 8th SWCO course took place on 25-28 July 2017 at the Saffron Walden County High School, finishing with a very successful concert in the Saffron Hall. 48 children attended the course, taking part in 4 days of orchestral playing as well as drumming  and singing workshops.

We shall be running courses at Easter and in the summer of 2018:

  • Easter course: 3 - 5 April 2018, 9.30-12.30 each day; and
  • Summer course: 24 - 27 July 2018, 9.30am-3.30pm each day.
If you would like to book a place on our Easter course, please fill out a copy of our Easter 2018 application form and send this to our SWCO administrator.
The Easter course will involve 3 mornings of orchestral playing. The cost will be £75 per child, with sibling discounts available as usual (please see booking form).
The summer course will be 4 days of orchestral playing, with drumming and singing workshops. The cost will be £120 per child, again with sibling discounts.

We welcome any feedback on the courses we run.
