Saffron Walden Children’s Orchestra (SWCO) is a training orchestra for young musicians living in and around Uttlesford. We welcome all young orchestral instrumentalists who are playing to a standard of grade 1 to 5 and who want to have fun learning how to play in an orchestra.

Our courses help children to develop as musicians and to enjoy learning how to play with others in a large ensemble. We usually play some classical as well as light repertoire. Children also work together with section coaches, and then on the final day all join together to perform as an orchestra. Our gallery has some recent images of the children’s orchestra.

The summer course

The next SWCO course will be held at the beginning of the summer holidays from 30 July to 2 August, running daily from 9.30-3.30pm at Saffron Walden County High School.

We welcome children aged 7 and above, who are grade 1-5 on an orchestral instrument.

There will be plenty of orchestral playing as well as taking part in smaller ensembles with brass, wind and string tutors. Other activities include African drumming, beat boxing and singing workshops.

There will be an end-of-course concert on the final day at Saffron Hall, when all friends and families are welcome to come and listen to the children.
